Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh is my very favorite artist. My love for color palettes used in many of my pieces are inspired by his remarkable paintings and imaginative use of color. I am equally enthralled by his tragic life as I am about his creative genius. He is truly a fascinating character in art history.

A little about the artist:

Vincent Willem van Gogh 30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still life’s, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness and poverty. To read more about his life and art click here.

The following video features a song written in 1971 by Don Mclean as a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh which describes different paintings done by the artist. Mclean wrote the lyrics after reading a book on Van Gogh’s life. The following year, the song became the number one hit in the U.K. and No. 12 in the U.S.

Favorite Quotes by van Gogh:

For my part, I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.

I dream of painting and then I paint my dream.
